JEE Main 2024 Result: How are cut-offs determined?
JEE Main sets two types of cut-offs:
Qualifying Cut-off: This is the minimum percentile or mark needed to qualify for JEE Advanced or to participate in counseling for NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs.
Admission Cut-off: These are the opening and closing ranks of various institutes and branches based on the candidate's category. These ranks reflect the competition level for specific seats.
Cut-offs for JEE Main are determined by the National Testing Agency (NTA) considering these factors:
-
Number of Applicants vs. Seats: There's a limited number of seats available in NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs compared to the number of JEE Main candidates. Therefore, with more applicants, the cut-off percentile or marks tend to be higher.
-
Difficulty Level of the Exam: If the JEE Main exam is challenging, the cut-off percentile might be slightly lower to accommodate overall performance. Conversely, an easier exam might result in a higher cut-off as more students achieve better scores.
-
Performance of Test Takers: NTA evaluates the overall scores of all candidates to set the cut-off. It's typically established at a specific percentile (e.g., top 90% for the General category) or based on achieving a certain minimum mark.
