The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced new attendance rules for the 2025 CBSE 10th and 12th exams. Students must have at least 75% attendance to be allowed to take the board exams in February 2025.

CBSE offers a 25% relaxation in attendance for certain situations, like medical emergencies or if students participate in national-level sports. However, students need to provide the right documents for these cases.

Guidelines for Schools

It’s important for both students and parents to understand the 75% attendance rule and what could happen if they don’t meet it.

• Medical Leave: If students need to take time off for health reasons, they should inform the school as soon as possible. They must submit a medical prescription and a certificate. If they don’t provide a written request, the absence will be marked as unauthorized.

• Leave Application: For medical emergencies, students should submit their leave application with valid medical documents right after taking leave. For other reasons, they must inform the school in writing and provide a valid reason for their absence.

• Inspection Procedures: If students are found absent without proper leave during a CBSE surprise inspection, it will be assumed they are not attending school regularly. This can result in disqualification from the board exams.

Attendance Records and Parent Notifications

Schools must keep accurate attendance records and check them regularly. Attendance registers should be updated every day and signed by the class teacher and the school’s authority. These records should be ready for CBSE inspections.

• If a student often misses school or does not meet the attendance requirement, the school must send a written notice to the parents. This notice should highlight the importance of regular attendance and explain that failing to comply may lead to disqualification from board exams.

Inspections and Consequences

CBSE may conduct surprise inspections to check attendance records. If the records are incomplete or if students are not attending regularly, the school could face serious consequences, like disaffiliation. Additionally, students might be disqualified from taking the board exams.

Note: Once the school submits attendance shortage cases to CBSE, no changes to the attendance records will be allowed.
